Spring 2010! We've had more snow this season than usual and it has provided us with the kind of moisture that leads to a lush summer of growth. In anticipation of that potential and in a mood to take our home to an even more beautiful state, we have dedicated ourselves to bring our gardens to the level of Giverny - the town in France that was the home of the gardens that so inspired the impressionist, Monet.

We are dedicating this entire page to the process of the revitalization. We will start with the state of the gardens in early spring.

Below are photos of the gardens on April 1st.

South Garden:

Here the beds are freshly planted and the new weeping cherry tree is already blooming to beat the band!

It's going to be hard to keep up with the flowering, but by May 5th things are starting to take off.

And two weeks later it's fuller, greener, and even more colorful.

By May 27 the south garden is looking more Giverny than ever . . .

And one last shot of the fountain . . .

We are so blessed to have super talented friends like Tony Rocha, our resident green thumb. Tony will be nursing the project along through the upcoming months. Go Tony!

West Terrace:

Check out the West Terrace on April 15th!

And a month later!

Window on Avalon:

We have taken Avalon down to its basics and are creating a whole new look for it. On the right we see Michael prepping the soil for the new fruit trees to be planted. We also see the lady of the house in a supervisory position.

Here are Marly and Majic Malloy helping us meet our deadline for the spring planting. With their help, Window on Avalon, will be an enchanted little hideaway.

Avalon seems to be the slowest to boom, but here are the beginnings.

We are also adding a section to Window on Avalon called Andrew's Attic in Avalon. This will be a long flower bed on the uphill side of Avalon. What you now see as bare, tilled earth will soon be a sea of luscious blossoms. Stay tuned . . .

July 14 - You don't have to stay tuned anymore. Andrew's Attic is finally filling with growth and blooms -

And while you're no longer staying tuned for Andrew's Attic, relish in the glorious view . . .

Or two . . .

By September 1st the attic has grown thick with flowers. It's quite a change from the bare earth back in April.

Upper Gardens:

The wisteria above the pond is budding out like gangbusters. Return to this page in a few weeks to see how all those buds turn into blossoms.

Here is the Wysteria on April 13. Wow! What a glorious blooming.

And by mid-May everything has greened gloriously!

You have just got to love the fragile yet beautiful spring blossoms on this small flowering almond tree!

And by the 1st of June the upper gardens are going gangbusters!

As we approach the first day of Autumn, the upper garden is as lush as summer gets . . .

Middle Gardens:

The middle gardens include the main yard, the lower pond, and the bamboo stands. It's a great place to kick back on a lawn chair and read a book or meditate upon the incredible view of the red rock cliffs across the valley. Below see Tony creating a new bed around the base of the old mulberry tree.

The bed Tony planted is beginning to fill out by the middle of May.

And keeping the lawns in immaculate shape is Pedro. Finding helpers who can work and have a great attitude is really a blessing. Thanks Pedro!

Lower Gardens:

The lower gardens should show some of the most dramatic change as the weeks progress. They should flower into a profusion of life and color that would inspire Monet and make him feel right at home.

And here's Tony again preparing the beds and planting some California Poppies

Two weeks later the cherry tree in the lower garden has popped!!

By May 18, the bed we saw Tony planting is blossoming!

Things can happen so quick. There is only a couple of weeks between these two shots.

On June 10, it's becoming lush!

Front Terraces:

All of these terraces and garden beds are our blank canvases. Keep checking in to see how they grow into works of art.

The Front Terrace is really coming along by April 15th.

May 4

May 18

May 27

By June 10 the Terrace is in full bloom.

July 14 - After a monsoon rain is a great time to photograph flowers . . .

More like Giverny every day.

Giverny:

Below is a photo from Monet's gardens at Giverny. They have been our role models this year. What fun!!

November 19

But, after all the explosion of life through the spring and summer eventually fall must come and ease the gardens into their winter sleep. It comes slowly and brings with it a quiet peaceful drowsiness.

Still, there are certain citizens of the gardens that refuse to go gentle into that good night. They rage against the dying of the light.

And it all happens here at The Surgeon's House at 100 Hill St., Jerome Arizona . . .

Along with the recreation of the gardens we have repaired and are continuing to reimagine the beautiful mural painted twelve years ago by Kim Smerek. Check it out here.

We would like to thank our two plant and seed purveyors - Verde River Growers in Cottonwood, AZ (928-639-0122) and Windmill Gardens in Cornville, AZ. These guys really know their business!
