September 23, 2010

So here we go again, another addition to the gracious lady that is the Surgeon's House. We are expanding the Maid's Suite Back by adding another 250 square feet. It will include a much larger bath area, sitting room, and outside deck. The first step is the clearing of the hillside out back to accommodate the new space.

Below, we see Melissa, Pedro, and Troy bringing down a few paradise trees to create a blank canvas for our builders.

October 18/19

After obtaining all the necessary permits from the town, we finally break ground. Actually, that's Pedro breaking ground.

Here's Contractor Bill making sure everyone is on the same page as the plans.

On a cloudy, foggy day we had our first inspection. Building inspector Dave decided that the footer needed to be six inches deeper. Welcome to the wonderful world of construction, said Contractor Bill

October 27

After that brief hiccup, Pedro and the crew start building the far wall of the new room.

October 28

And the next day - from morning to lunch to the next morning, progress is made.

We also had to move the main electric service to the house to another location. Here are Electrician Dave and his helper making that happen.

Finally, Carpenter Jeff and Carpenter Max The Younger cut into the wall of the house to prepare for the floor that will span the walkway below.

And here comes the floor.

Moving the power from the pole to a new location on the side of the house and the installation of the new meter only took a couple of hours in the morning. Nice work!

November 11

Things are moving fast now. Check out new Carpenter Rowdy framing up the room!

Can you see the room now?

Then Welder Lou and his yummy dog, Peabody, had to reinforce the wall that will hold the french doors to the outside patio.

And finally, Carpenter Jeff and Carpenter Greg get the roof on

Plumber Clark stubs out the water and sewer lines.

Here we see the last guests, Jeff and Peg, to ever stay in the small version of the Maid's Back Room.

And soon after Jeff and Rowdy, with a little help from Webmaster Terry, start taking out the wall separating the room from the addition .

Meanwhile, on the roof above them, the Unknown Roofer lays down the shingling with the aid of a torch.

November 26:

The race is on to finish the room by December 3. On the left, Rowdy is installing the wall paneling. On the right, the Stucco Team installs the backing for the stucco.

We are also racing against the weather.

November 29:

Here's Jeff laying down the flooring.

And here are Jeff, Terry, and Artist Jim hauling the tub up to the new room on a very cold morning.

November 30

Meanwhile, it just kept getting colder.

The rush is on. Juan and the Stucco Team work in the cold weather.

The Painters John and Brandon on the other hand got to work in a warm room.

December 1

Welder Lou and Terry hang the custom shower curtain rail, and Clark finishes installation of the tub.

And here comes the kingsize bed!

December 2

That leaves it for Melissa and Destiny to do the final polish and clean-up.

December 3

And then, finally, it's done! Isn't it beautiful!

Our first guests, Kathy and Tom certainly think so!

December 8

In all our excitement we forgot that we hadn't finished the exterior of the room! The outside has yet to be painted and the patio and retaining wall have to be laid. Here we see Artist Jim meditating and visualizing how the patio and wall will look when they're done. On the right we see him explaining it all to Owner Andrea.

December 14

Using rock from the adjacent hillside, Jim and Pedro construct the patio retaining wall. Jim calls it the neanderthal style. Could even a caveman do it?

December 22

Winter weather is making it slow going for the wall and patio, but Jim and Pedro slog on through the rain and mud to complete the job.

Once the wall is basically finished, the flagstone for the patio floor is delivered. This happens during the period of winter storms that are ravaging southern California.

In between storms, the sand, which acts as a bed for the flagstone, gets delivered and layed down.

December 29

And then, with another big storm coming in, the flagstone goes down. Will they complete it before the snow?

And the answer is no (notice the snowflakes falling in front of Jim's black jacket). But they soldier on, Jim, Keith, and Keegan. Like back in the day, when men were men . . .

December 30

They manage to finish the patio just in time for winter to cover it with blanket of snow.

January 12

After a week of historic freezing weather that froze up water pipes all through town, Jim and Keith finish the gate that leads from the patio to our Window on Avalon.

January 19

The weather clears and warms up, allowing the painters to come back and finish the exterior. First they paint all the windows and doors.

Then they do the final touch-up and spray the primer and final coat.

January 20

Some things begin with a vision . . . and then . . . there they are . . .

February 22

But there was one final vision. Looking out from the kitchen windows to the underside of the new addition, Jim painted us a glorious vision of the night sky that had been lost.

Now it is truly complete.
