September 23, 2010 So here we go again, another addition to the gracious lady that is the Surgeon's House. We are expanding the Maid's Suite Back by adding another 250 square feet. It will include a much larger bath area, sitting room, and outside deck. The first step is the clearing of the hillside out back to accommodate the new space. Below, we see Melissa, Pedro, and Troy bringing down a few paradise trees to create a blank canvas for our builders. October 18/19 After obtaining all the necessary permits from the town, we finally break ground. Actually, that's Pedro breaking ground. Here's Contractor Bill making sure everyone is on the same page as the plans. On a cloudy, foggy day we had our first inspection. Building inspector Dave decided that the footer needed to be six inches deeper. Welcome to the wonderful world of construction, said Contractor Bill October 27 After that brief hiccup, Pedro and the crew start building the far wall of the new room. October 28 And the next day - from morning to lunch to the next morning, progress is made.
We also had to move the main electric service to the house to another location. Here are Electrician Dave and his helper making that happen. Things are moving fast now. Check out new Carpenter Rowdy framing up the room! ![]() The race is on to finish the room by December 3. On the left, Rowdy is installing the wall paneling. On the right, the Stucco Team installs the backing for the stucco. Here's Jeff laying down the flooring. Meanwhile, it just kept getting colder. The rush is on. Juan and the Stucco Team work in the cold weather. Welder Lou and Terry hang the custom shower curtain rail, and Clark finishes installation of the tub. That leaves it for Melissa and Destiny to do the final polish and clean-up. And then, finally, it's done! Isn't it beautiful! ![]() ![]() In all our excitement we forgot that we hadn't finished the exterior of the room! The outside has yet to be painted and the patio and retaining wall have to be laid. Here we see Artist Jim meditating and visualizing how the patio and wall will look when they're done. On the right we see him explaining it all to Owner Andrea. Using rock from the adjacent hillside, Jim and Pedro construct the patio retaining wall. Jim calls it the neanderthal style. Could even a caveman do it? Winter weather is making it slow going for the wall and patio, but Jim and Pedro slog on through the rain and mud to complete the job. And then, with another big storm coming in, the flagstone goes down. Will they complete it before the snow? They manage to finish the patio just in time for winter to cover it with blanket of snow. After a week of historic freezing weather that froze up water pipes all through town, Jim and Keith finish the gate that leads from the patio to our Window on Avalon.
The weather clears and warms up, allowing the painters to come back and finish the exterior. First they paint all the windows and doors.
Some things begin with a vision . . . and then . . . there they are . . . But there was one final vision. Looking out from the kitchen windows to the underside of the new addition, Jim painted us a glorious vision of the night sky that had been lost. ![]() |
