The Ongoing Project Journal!!

Spring 2012 is bursting with life. This year we decided to finally plant a small vegetable garden. We've fooled around for a couple of years, but this spring we decided to really go for it. We actually built a shelter for the plants and are starting to get serious about this idea of growing foods for our salads and vegetable dishes.

We have also added a new feature to the site. Since we receive so many questions about our gardens we decided to include a garden inquiry form at the bottom of this page. If you scroll down to the bottom you will see a form that will allow you to ask any question you might have about our gardens.

It's still a little primitive, as you can see by the boxes on the ground, but now that we've really started it will all evolve.

Here you can see different kinds of lettuce and vegetables.

We will be improving the facilities and planting more scrumptious vegetables and tantalizing herbs for our kitchen. Yeah!! So keep checking back in to see what goodies we come up with . . .

A couple of days later and the improvements have already started. You can see Brian and Brian hauling the pink gravel to create a flooring in the greenhouse area that drains away the water and prevents a mud pit in the grow area

Ahh ... that's better . . . Now, it's time to improve the sprinkler system in the main yard. The job was to install the type of sprinkler heads that are hidden in the grass until the system is turned on. Then the water pressure pops the heads up and they blanket the grass in a nourishing spray. And voila! Just like, that the magic happens.

Spring is a great time to take care of outside projects, it seems, because we keep getting them done. The pond pumps are always a maintenance issue and need to be kept up on. Wayne` from High Desert Pool and Spa came out to replace the filter to the lower pond (which has been murky for the past few months). It was a beautiful day and the work went well. Ah, we love it when a plan comes together . . .

And now we can clearly see our beautiful finned friends in all their glory . . .

July 8th - It turns out that all our spring projects have spilled over into the summer. Kim Smerek has returned to the fold. She, of course, is the artist who painted the fabulous mural in the upper garden patio area. On this day, she is repainting her original floor mural at the front door. Over the years the weather and foot traffic have taken the sheen off the original. After today, it will be back in all its beautiful color. (Before and after, below.)

November 1st - It seems as if this page is turning into a project journal. With winter coming on it became obvious that we had to get the plants off the ground and more convenient to work on. So, we called our old friend Bill to help out. Fortunately, he was between jobs, and the weather was good, and we promised to feed him, and - well, you know . . .

Bill does a standing meditation wherein he communes mystically with the wood before setting it in place. Shhh . . .

And the meditation works. Now we're ready for the colder weather. Nice job, Bill, thanks ever so . . .

Well, we were almost ready for the colder weather, but it seemed like it would be a good idea to enclose the greenhouse and be able to control the temperature somewhat. So, the team devised an elegant way to wrap the enclosure with semi-transparent tarps . . . .

And now for something completely different. Randy and David, long term friends of ours from Palm Desert, California (and so famous that they just go by their first names like Madonna) presented us with an incredibly heart felt gift of a custom sundial. A local artist, Leo Shakespeare, has been making these beautiful, one-of-a-kind sculptures for years. We see him here adjusting the sundial exactly to the sun. Below he explains how the sundial works, not only telling the time of day but the date, including the soltices and equinoxes. What a delight!
