March 15, 2019 - We left some apples out for the coons and javelinas and coyotes, but it was an industrious squirrel who managed to get one in his little mouth and take it home.

March 13, 2019 - Here comes the color! After a brief sleet storm, the gardens begin their rebirth. From fruit trees to ground cover, life abounds.

March 4, 2019 - The snow melts. We move into March. The flowers start to awaken.

February 21, 2019 - Walking up to the Surgeon's House in the snowfall.

February 22, 2019 - The next morning.

February 17, 2019 - Well, the coyote came back and this time there was only one racoon. It looks like there was a standoff. First the coyote approaches from the bottom. Then the coon bristles. Then the coyote decides to mark the territory. We're thinking that it's a female coyote. What do you think?

February 14, 2019 - It's Valentine's Day, but it doesn't seem like there is any love lost when the coons and a coyote meet at the feeding area at the same time. The coyote circles the pack, and they pivot, facing him, as he does. Fortunately, no violence ensued.

February 13, 2019 - It's winter alright, but there are still some bright spots of color.

January 25, 2019 - Good lord! They're only thirty feet from the house!

January 24, 2019 - Sometimes it's hard to tell that it's still winter. The sun is bright and warm and the flowers are blooming . . .

January 18, 2019 - In the afternoon, in the bright light of day, one of the coyotes returned. We think it's the female. She slips in, looks around to see if there's anything to worry about, and then lies down in the warm sun as if she owns the place. Did we say that the coyotes love apples? Who knew?

January 17, 2019 - Last night the coyote showed up with a friend. Or, perhaps, that is his mate. They both look very healthy, don't they?

January 16, 2019 - The Surgeon's House has many moods. Sometimes a front comes in over the mountain and we are lost in a cloud. The world below disappears and we are alone in an island of quiet and a stillness. Our finned friends sink to the bottom of their ponds and huddle together for warmth. The gardens sleep and wait for the seasons to change.

January 4, 2019

Snow came right after a hard New Year's freeze. A hard freeze means that in various places around town pipes actually froze and folks were without running water. It's a real wake-up call. For us it meant that a recently installed water line to the Chauffeur's Quarters froze solid, and visitors woke up in the morning with a toilet that wouldn't flush and a shower that wouldn't shower. So . . . Joshua had to reinsulate the entire line with new electric heat tape.

December 23, 2018

As of this date we have yet to receive any snow. There have been a couple of cold days, but generally it's been warm and sunny. Below are a few photos of plants that should not be blooming this time of year and some that are behaving correctly.
