Something like nearly 20 years ago we were surprised by the appearance of what technically qualifies as graffiti at The Surgeon’s House in the cubbyhole doorway under the staircase leading to the site of the Perry Ling.
Today, 5/22/2025, is a day of great celebration and recognition of two of the world’s most memorable, classy, and graceful ladies – Miss Anna Johnson and us, The Surgeon’s House!
The gods were surely smiling on us when Joshua captured these images of the finned folks literally getting into the swim of May.
Sometimes designs outlive their usefulness and utility which happened to be the case of the collapse of the arbor at the top of the stairs leading to the Chauffeur’s Quarters. The former arbor was a combo meal deal of manzanita and a live grape vine and when it fell it fell – the grapevine snapped so everything had to be removed and redesigned.
What better way to ring in the Celtic season of Beltane than with the arrival of new finned folks? Former guests Shelley and Dave down in Cottonwood found themselves needing to rehome their two koi and one Plecostomus and were gracious enough to think of us – yay! Dave had the perfect net and set about wrestling the three of our charges into our transporting cooler.
In all of my well over 60 years of actively being a dirt-digging girl, I have never succeeded in having a violet root from a leaf in water . . . very frustrating. Until NOW when just on a lark I placed 6 broken leaves in a small glass of water and hoped for the best.
Not wanting to lose momentum and the grace of the fair weather, we forged ahead correcting the design flaw in the back of one set of chairs that caused the back cushion to escape the moment someone sat down.
With the delivery to Mike and Katie of all our new fabric, we decided to launch into painting prep on the millions of pieces of outside furniture – scraping and sanding is paramount and the Captain is replacing all the rubber padding on the glass-topped tables.
