BEAUTY IS WHERE WE FIND IT! (I THINK!)

This little romance is so comical we simply HAD to share it with everyone. Several years ago, we created a holiday tree out of broken pieces of mirror. It was such a labor of love and creativity that there was no way we were going to pitch it in the trash when the holiday was over. It found a home in the corner of the back walkway where, to our surprise, it has remained relatively unscathed by the elements for nearly four years.  Notice the robin on the pot at the bottom left on the pot.

A little over one week ago, I repeatedly spied a robin running first in one direction and then the opposite around the base of the tree.  He would stay behind the tree for a short while and I would hear skittering and pecking. I figured he was building a little safe nesty place out of the wind UNTIL I watched more closely as he stood on the pots surrounding the tree.

As male and female robins are, uncharacteristically in most species of critter, nearly identically colored and marked, this little guy would look at this own reflection in the mirror, fluff up his feathers, hunker down trying to look cute, and peck at the mirror to get his beloved’s attention. We have checked and he really can see himself although he thinks that he is courting his queen. . .

He is one persistent suitor as he repeats his advances throughout the day and into the early evening. Neither rain nor hail nor sleet NOR SNOW can keep this guy from his courtship. We really wish we could show you a video as this romantic dance is just precious – take a look.
