JUNE IS WORKING UP A POWERFUL THIRST

We feed the birds multi times daily and with the absence of precipitation along with rising temps, keeping the water bin really ultra-full has become paramount. Every variety of creature is looking to wet a whistle and in the case of our raccoon visitors, more than a whistle seems to be popular. Some folks are passing the watering-hole-word and bringing friends.

Even Sneaky the Snail showed up at the lower pond for a little sip.

As in many situations in nature, balance is eventually achieved and an equilibrium is restored even though it may appear to be axis-tipping to us mortals. The warmer temps are producing a prolific blooming season which encourages mighty foraging by our new kingdom inhabitants of Queens Stella and Natasha domains.

What a great sign this activity is and next week we are scheduled to attempt relocation of a swarm that has set up housekeeping in our helper Tara’s water meter – oops. While the location is inviting and handy for the lucky swarm, regrettably utility workers typically foam first (meaning kill with a foam spray) and ask questions later.  In prepping a travel box for what I hope will be our new girls, we discovered one of the dead colonies from last year. What few ladies remained were huddled in a pile and look who we discovered in the middle . . . breeders always mark their queens with a dot so they can ensure buyers they have a viable colony.

Wish us success in our rescue effort assist in re-establishing a balance here on our Coconut Island in the Sky and welcoming Queen Kathleen!  In high hopes of bringing them home, we have already named her!
